How to Manage Dental Imaging

MyDentalPractice includes tools for uploading, viewing, and annotating dental images to support diagnosis and treatment planning.

Uploading Images

From the Patient Profile

  • Open the patient record
  • Click the Imaging tab
  • Click + Upload Image
  • Select image type:
  • - Periapical X-ray

    - Panoramic (OPG)

    - Bitewing

    - CBCT (3D scan)

    - Cephalometric

    - Clinical Photograph (intraoral/extraoral)

  • Choose the file from your computer or connect directly from your X-ray sensor
  • Add a description and date taken
  • Click Upload
  • Supported Formats

    FormatType
    JPEG, PNGClinical photographs and standard X-ray exports
    DICOMDirect from digital sensors and CBCT machines
    TIFFHigh-resolution imaging

    Viewing Images

    Click any image to open it in the built-in viewer:

    Basic Controls

  • Zoom — Scroll wheel or pinch to zoom
  • Pan — Click and drag to move around
  • Rotate — Rotate 90° clockwise or counter-clockwise
  • Flip — Horizontal or vertical flip
  • Image Enhancement

  • Brightness — Adjust overall brightness
  • Contrast — Enhance or reduce contrast
  • Invert — Swap black/white for negative view (useful for X-rays)
  • Sharpen — Enhance edges and details
  • DICOM Viewer

    For DICOM files, additional tools include:

  • Windowing — Adjust window width and level
  • Measurements — Measure distances and angles on the image
  • Presets — Quick windowing presets for bone, soft tissue, etc.
  • Annotating Images

    Add annotations to highlight findings:

  • Open the image in the viewer
  • Click Annotate in the toolbar
  • Use annotation tools:
  • - Arrow — Point to a finding

    - Circle — Highlight an area

    - Text — Add a label

    - Measurement — Draw a distance or angle

  • Click Save Annotations
  • Annotations are saved as an overlay and can be toggled on/off.

    Comparing Images

    Compare images side by side:

  • Select two images from the Imaging tab
  • Click Compare
  • Both images open in a split-screen viewer
  • Useful for tracking changes over time (before/after treatment)
  • Organizing Images

    Images are automatically organized by:

  • Date taken
  • Image type
  • Associated treatment or clinical note
  • Create custom albums for specific cases (e.g., "Orthodontic Progress — Adaeze Okafor").
