How to Generate Prescriptions

MyDentalPractice includes a built-in prescription module that lets you create professional prescriptions, check for drug interactions, and maintain a complete medication history for each patient.

Creating a Prescription

  • Open the patient record
  • Click the Prescriptions tab
  • Click + New Prescription
  • Adding Medications

    For each medication:

  • Start typing the drug name — the system searches a built-in drug database
  • Select the correct medication from the dropdown
  • Fill in the prescription details:
  • - Dosage — e.g., 500mg

    - Frequency — e.g., Twice daily

    - Duration — e.g., 7 days

    - Route — Oral, Topical, Injection, etc.

    - Quantity — Total number of tablets/capsules/units

    - Instructions — Special directions (e.g., "Take after meals", "Do not crush")

  • Click Add to include the medication in the prescription
  • You can add multiple medications to a single prescription.

    Drug Interaction Checks

When you add a medication, the system automatically checks for:

  • Drug-drug interactions — Conflicts between prescribed medications
  • Drug-allergy interactions — Conflicts with the patient's recorded allergies
  • Duplicate therapy — Same or similar drug already prescribed
  • Warnings appear in three severity levels:

    LevelColorAction
    SevereRedMust acknowledge before proceeding
    ModerateOrangeReview recommended
    MildYellowInformational only

    Common Dental Prescriptions

The system includes quick-select templates for common dental prescriptions:

  • Post-Extraction — Amoxicillin 500mg + Ibuprofen 400mg
  • Dental Infection — Augmentin 625mg + Metronidazole 400mg
  • Pain Management — Ibuprofen 400mg or Diclofenac 50mg
  • Pre-Medication — Amoxicillin 2g (for patients requiring antibiotic prophylaxis)
  • Click Templates when creating a prescription to select a pre-built template.

    Printing and Sharing

    After creating the prescription:

  • Print — Generates a formatted prescription with your clinic header, patient details, and medications
  • Email — Send a PDF copy to the patient
  • SMS — Send a brief summary to the patient's phone
  • The printed prescription includes:

  • Clinic name, address, and contact
  • Prescribing dentist's name and license number
  • Patient name and age
  • Date of prescription
  • Medication details with clear instructions
  • Signature line
  • Prescription History

View all prescriptions for a patient in the Prescriptions tab, sorted by date. Each entry shows:

  • Date prescribed
  • Medications included
  • Prescribing dentist
  • Status (Active, Completed, Cancelled)
  • For clinical documentation, see How to Write Clinical Notes. For patient allergies, see Medical History.
